NOTES.
P. 56, 1. 9–णं असेओ &c. We have here adopted the reading of G,
as being probably more correct than that of our MSS., which
read: "णं असोओ कुसुमं ण दंसेदि । अअं उण ण केवलं फुल्लइ फलइ एव."
P.56,1.10—फलद अ. This refers to the children that Mâlavikâ
would bear to the King. The coarseness of the allusion is
in keeping with the character of Irâvatî.
P.56,1.12–प्रतिपत्तिः Cf. Raghuvaḿśa , III. 45, ‘ विषादलृप्तप्रतिपत्ति" &c.
P.56,1.13.- -जङ्गाबलं एव्वः ‘No other way of getting out of this scrape
but by taking to our heels. '
P.57,1.9-संधिछ्छेअस्सिख्खको, •’One that punishes or wants to punish
a crime of house-breaking.’ with संधिच्छेद. cf. संधिचैौर, a housebreaker. शिक्षक, properly a teacher, is used here in its modern
sense, a chastiser, orf punisher : G. reads "* संधिच्छेअसिख्खी होमि"
&c. On the simile, cf. Vikramorvaśî', Act II.लोत्तेण सूहदअस्स
कम्भीलअस्स णथ्थि वाआ पलिविधाणम्".
P.57,1.11–मया 'This is to be construed with विनोदितः, and not
with चिरायसि।
P.58,1.2.-अण्णहा दुःखतरं एव्वं ण करेमि. * Otherwise (i.e. had I
known that you have obtained such a thing to while away your
time with), I would not have been the cause of so much annoyance to you' by intruding upon your privacy. दुख्खतरं एव्वं ण
करेमि seems to be rather a dificult passage. This is, however,
the reading of all our MSS.* If the reading is not corrupt the poet
appears to have intended that Irâvatî's words should express the
sense of the easier speech of Queen Auśînarî in Vikramorvaśî,
Act II., “दुरागदं दाणिं मे संव्वुत्त्तः ’
P.53,1.5.-समापत्तिदिठ्ठेण, ‘यदृच्छया दृष्टेन.
P.58,1.6.-एथ्थ नुमं एव्व प्पमाणं ‘You only are an authority for such
a doctrine.' Or ’ do as you like, we must obey'

  • G reads दुख्खरं & c.
