P. 53, 1. 13.-सदृशविनिमयात्.सदृश, because both were red.-आत्मानं
वञ्चितं मन्ये. • ’I consider myself as the only unfortunate one”
The King neans, that both the Aśoka and the lady Mâlavikâ
have honoured each the other, the Aśoka having been favoured
by the latter with the graceful touch of her lovely foot, and
the lady having received in return a bud or sprout of young
leaves to make a pendant of for her ear; but that he (the King)
himself has unfortunately exchanged nothing as yet with the
object of his love. वञ्चित means 'passed over' or 'disregarded
in distribution, ’void of”; 'wanting in”. C. Raghuvaḿs'a, VII. 8,
तद्वञ्चितवामनेत्रा"Cf. also Ṡâkuntala, p. 17, stanza . 1,* चलापाङ्गां
&c, Calc. Bd. 1860.
P.54,1.3.—संभावितः *' honoured.' See note on p. 47, 1. 13.
P.54,1.5.--दोहलं ललितकामिसाधारणम् < a desire common with persons
fond of the graceful actions of young women', viz, the desire
to be kicked by them. ललितकामो, ‘स्त्रीविलसितकामी’ ‘विलसनशीलः
कामी' वा. Cf. also stanza 12, above.
P.54,1.6.–प्रवेष्टुमिच्छामि- Cf . the very similar scene in Śâkuntala,
Act III., 'अवसरः खल्वयमात्मानं दर्शयितुम.’” &c, p. 58, 1, 4, Calc.

P.54,1.14–गहीदथ्थाए, ‘ who knewest the fact, namely, that the Aśoka
belongs to His Majesty the King: गहोदथ्था means 'informed' ,
'made aware of' It is used absolutely, however, and does not
always require to be joined, like the Latin 'certior factus', to its
object. Lit. it signifies, 'one who has taken the sense': See
above p. 52, 1. 15. Also Śâkuntala, p. 132, 1. 3, Calc. Do. 1860.
Also Vikramorvaśî Act II. , ‘‘ णं गहीदथथा होहि. ”
P.55,1.10.–संप्रति बाधा. Supply अस्ति किम्.
P.56.1.7–धृतिपुष्पम्, ‘यादृशं [= पादताडनानुभवसुखानन्तरम्] पुष्पमशाको
बद्धातादृशं धृति पुष्पं [पादताडनाद्यनुभवसुखरूपं पुष्पम् ]. The पुष्प as
referred to the King is the gratification he will feel after Mâlavikâ
should comply with his entreaty.
