our " निदेशे"

P.52,1.1. –कारिदं एव्व &c. Bakulâvalikâ has already induced Mâlavikâ

to enter upon the enterprise of trying to become the King's

bride' पदं कृ is ’to set foot upon”, ’to enter. ' And so in the

present passage कारिदं पदं means has induced her to go with her

to do as she (Bakulâwalikâ) would direct' See Śâkuntala, p. 81

11.8,9, Calc Ed., for a similar though not quite parallel passage

The Banglaore MS. G has quite a different reading in this place;

हञ्जे पेख्ख असंपाख्खिअकारित्तणं बउलावलिआए एदं पदं मालविआए ।

P.53,1.5. -एतावता, scil. सादरोत्कण्ठितायुक्तेन “ किं भट्टा" इति प्रश्नेन. On

पर्याप्तम्, cf. Vikramorvaśî, Act II. "सदं ण उण पज्जत्तं हिअअस्स

P.58,1.6.-अनादरोत्कण्ठितयो : &c. The King means, that now that

he has learned that Mâlavikâ is as anxious and love-sick as he

himself, and that he is himself the object of her passion, he would

not care even if he and his mistress should die without ever

being joined in actual wedlock. For he had rather that two

persons loving each other equally should never be able to

marry than that if they are not really passionate of each other,

but one of them indifferent (अनादर), and the other panting

with love, they should come in contact and be married , G reads

अनातुरोकाण्ठितयोः for अनादरोस्कण्ठितयो

P.53,1.10.–सलीलम्, ‘ playfully, gracefully.

P.53.1,12. .-अत्र चरणमर्पयातिः ‘ Blesses him with her foot, i.e. touches

or kicks him with her foot. Here अत्र = अस्मिन.
