( अथ प्रकीर्णकाः )

रामोऽपि हतमारीचो निवत्स्यंन् खरनाविनः ।
क्रोष्टून् समशृणोत् क्रूरान् रसतोऽशुभशंसिनः ॥ ५ ॥

आशङ्कमानो वैदेहीं खादितां निहतां मृतम् ।
स शत्रुघ्नस्य सोवयं दूरादायान्तमैक्षत ॥ ६ ॥

सीतां सौमित्रिणा त्यक्तां समीचीं वस्तुमेकिकाम् ।
विज्ञायाऽमंस्त काकुत्स्थः 'क्षये क्षेमं सुदुर्लभम् ॥ ७ ॥

( अतः परं दुहादिः )

सोऽपृच्छलक्ष्मणं सीतां याचमानः शिवं सुरान् ।
रामं यथास्थितं सर्वं भ्राता बूते स्म विह्वलः ॥ ८ ॥

सन्दृश्य शरणं शून्यं भिक्षमाणो वनं प्रियाम् ।
प्राणान् दुहनिवात्मानं शोकं चित्तमवा वधत् ॥ ९ ॥

 5. On his own part, Rama, who had killed Marica, heard, (while) returning ferocious jackals that howled like donkeys, forboding evil.

 6. Suspecting the Videha princess to have been devoured, killed or dead, he espied, Laksmana approaching (him) from afar.

 7. Having realised that his timid companion, Sita, was left all alone by the son of Sumitra, the descendant of Kakutstha reflected, ‘Scarce is happiness in my house'.

 8. Soliciting the gods for welfare, he enquired Laksmana about Sita. The distressed brother narrated to Rama everything as it had happened.

 9. Seeing the house vacant, Rama, begging the forest for Sita, committed grief to his mind as if extracting his vital breaths out of himself.
