[ 285 ] The food also which is dear to each is threefold, as also sacrifice, austerity and almsgiving. Hear thou the distinction of these. (7) आहारः food ; तु indeed; अपि also; सर्वस्य of all; त्रिविधः threefold; भवति 15; प्रियः dear ; यज्ञः sacrifice ; तपः austerity; तथा also; दानं gift; तेषाम् of these, भेदं distinction ; इमं this ; शृणु bear. आयुःसत्वबलारोग्यसुखप्रीतिविवर्धनाः । रस्याः स्निग्धाः स्थिरा ह्रद्या आहाराः सात्विकप्रियाः।। The foods that augment vitality, energy, vigour, , health, joy and cheerfulness, delicious, bland, substantial and agreeable, are dear to the pure. (8) आयुःसत्वबलारोग्यसुखप्रीतिविवर्धनाः- -आयुः च सत्वं च बलं च आ- रोग्यं च सुखं च प्रीतिः च तासाम् विवर्धनाः vitality, and, purity, and, strength, and, health, and, pleasure, and, cheerfulness, and, these, the increasers ; रस्या: delicious; स्निगधा: bland; स्थिरा: substantial ; ह्रद्या: agreeable; आहारा: foods ; सात्विकप्रिया: = सात्वि कानां प्रियाः of the satvic, dear. कट्वम्ललवणात्युष्णतीक्ष्णरूक्षविदाहिनः । आहारा राजसस्येष्टा दुःखशोकामयप्रदाः ॥ ९ ॥ The passionate desire foods that are bitter, sour, saline, over-hot, pungent, dry and burning, and which produce pain, grief and sickness.
