(215) (E) Kālidāsa indicates that a musician must have a Muraja or some other kind of drum for keeping time and a stringed or wind instrument for acco- mpaniment or drone. S It will be seen from above that the present practice of our musicians to learn first the seven notes and then their several combinations in ascent and descent is reflected in Kālidāsa. Even now they sing first the notes of a mode (नोम् थोम्) and then sing the song set to that mode. They require, while singing, a तबला or पखवाज and a तंबोरा, सारंगी or flute played by their side. (B) INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. 4. Kālidāsa appears to be well conversant with many drum-instruments. He gives the names of मुरज, मृदङ्ग, अङ्कय, आलिङ्गय, ऊर्ध्वक, मर्दल etc. in his works; but he makes special mention of the Puskara instrument in the Mālavikāgnimitra 10 9 शब्दायन्ते मधुरमनिलै: कोचका; पूर्यमाणाः । -कुमार० To XI. 37.
