INTRODUCTION Malli. quotes frequently from the Tikāsarvasva assigned to A.D. 1159,¹ mentioning Sarvänanda by name a number of times (11). He also quotes a verse (p. 438) from the Vairāgya- pañcaka of Vedāntadeśika (b. A.D. 1268).2 Hence the lower limit of his date may be placed in the beginning of the 14th cent. Malli. should have lived long before Bhanuji, for his quotations of Gopālita are identical with those attributed to Bopālita in the same context by Bhānuji.³ Rāyamukuta, the author of the Padacandrika (A.D. 1431,4 14705) is never mentioned by Malli. The absence of any mention of the Siddhantakaumudī suggests that Malli. wrote his comm. before the 17th cent. xlvii The introductory (paribhāṣā) verses of Amara are explained clearly by Malli. with a large number of illustrations, pointing out the significance of words often missed by other com- mentators. Svāmin, Sūrin, Bhānuji and others take the meaning of ca only as 'and' in combining rupabheda and sahacarya in: प्रायशो रूपभेदेन साहचर्याच्च कुत्रचित् (p. 3). But it is indicatory (upalakşana); it is not rūpabheda and sähacarya alone that give an indication of the gender of a word. Malli. observes that the gender is sometimes indicated by the affix (pratyaya), e.g. ktin to denote the fem. in words like vibhuti and bhūti: 1 T.
