xlvi AMARAKOŚA MALLINATHA'S AMARAPADAPĀRIJĀTA Mallinātha, the author of the Amarapadapārijāta, the second comm. given in this edition is to be distinguished from his well-known namesake, the commentator on the pañcamaha- kavya-s. This commentator on the Ak. too hails from the Andhra country as testified by his liberal use of Telugu equivalents in all the three Kända-s. His father was Nrsimha- sūrin¹ of the Śrīvatsagotra. He also gives his family name as Bollāṭinmi: बोल्लाटिन्मिनृसिंहसूरितनयः श्रीमल्लिनाथो ... । He states in the introductory verse (p. 2) that he made a thorough study of the tika of Subhūti, as also the comms. Amarabhasya and Amaravarttika, etc: टीकां सुभूते: अमरभाष्यवार्त्तिकमुखान् ग्रन्थान् बहूनादरात् । Malli. confines himself to bringing out the meaning when it differs from the interpretation of his predecessors. The great task he undertakes is to supply the omissions in Ak. This included collecting a list of words which were either rarely used or had fallen into disuse, which Amara did not mention. 1 In one MS. (A₁) it is said in v. 7 that Nrsimha, proficient in the three Veda-s, was his paternal grandfather (nrsimho yatpitämahaḥ) and Tripurări his great grandfather. But in v. 2 (12th in A₁) it is stated that he was the son of Nṛsimhasürin (nrsimhasüritanayaḥ śrimallinatho muda). In v. 8 (A₁) it is said that his father was called Näganāthasudhi (śri nāganāthasudhiyam namāmi janakam mama). But as MS. A₁ in general, and the introductory verses in particular, are somewhat unreliable and as the colophon at the end of each Varga mentions Nrsimha as his father (srivatsanṛsimhasūrisutamallināthasüri...) we can take it that he was the son of Nrsimha. Two or three colophons in A₁ mention the name of the author as Mallikarjuna. He might have been thus affectionately addressed by his friends or more probably it is a scribal error.
