He is well known as Patamàla to the readers of the Chanda Ràsà. ( Mahobà Samaya). The defeat of Pararmardideva at the hands ०f Prthrvfràja 'is confirmed by the short inscriptions recorded by the order of Pthviràja at Madanapttra in 1183 A. D. Later on he `was attacked and defeated by Kutb-ud-din Ibak in 1203 A. p- Shortly after this defeat he died a natural death. Kàlinjara seem1s to have been soon recovered by the Chandels as Trailokyavrarma is also called,' like his fathetr, Kàiinjaràdhipati (lord of Kàlinjara) . Paramardideva `was liberal. That he was a man of letters and a poet too is testified by his composition of a long Prasasti to Siva,* ‘which, however, seems to been composed by Vatsaràja, as it contains the verse (दास्येऽष्ई) found in the Karptàracharitra.
The Manuscript material--The present edition of 'Vatsaràja’s dramas is based on two palm-leaf mss. of the works hitherto known. The first consisting of 183 leaves contains (1) Hàsyachudāmani 1-51, (2) Tript1radàha 52-103, (3) Kirātàrjuniya 104-130, and (4) Samudramathana 131-183, while the other contains Karptaracharitra 1-18 and Rukmintharana 1-39. Both cf these measure 14*x1*1/2 and contain 3 to 4 lines containing about 50 letters each and are written in the same hand. These mss. bear
