Yi (1104–1141) who was a Jain was won by Ramanuja to the Vaishnava faith. The devotion of Ramanaja's disciples to their Guru was singular, and they weło so much struck by his personality that they believed him to be an Angel come down to teach true religion. Ramanuja entrusted to 74 apostles (Simbasanadhipathis) the mission of disseminating his teachings. Ananta Somayaji, one of such apostles, had a grand-son named Anantasuri, who married Totaramba, the sister of Ramanuja Appullar, otherwise known as Vadihamsambuvaba. Totaramba traced her descent from Kidambi Atchan, one of the 74 apostleg. Anantasuri and Totaramba lived at Kanchi (Conjeevaram), a city famous as a seat of learning. Our author was born of these parents at Thuppil, a suburb of Kanchi, in September of 1268 A.D. (the Tamil year Vibhava). He was duly initiated by his father and then placed under the tuition of his maternal uncle Ramanuja Appullar. He mastered all branches of Sanskrit stady before be completed his 20th year.
