[ BHATTIKAVYA
 

त्वं तु भीरु: सुदुर्मुखं ! नित्यं शरणकास्यसि ।
गुणांश्चाऽपह्नुषेऽस्माकं, स्तौषि शर्तेश्च नः सदा ॥ ४४ ॥

शर्षच्छेद्यमतोऽहं त्वां करोमि क्षितिवर्धनम् ।
कारयिष्यामि वा कृत्यं निजिघृक्षुर्वनौकस ॥ ४५ ॥

तमुद्यतनिशातास प्रत्युवाच जिजीविषुः ।
मारीचोऽनुनयंस्त्रासाव् ‘‘अभ्यमित्यो भवामि ते ॥ ४६ ॥

हामि रामसौमित्री मृगो भूत्वा मृगयुवौ ।
उद्योगमभ्यमित्रीणो यथेष्टं त्वं च सन्तनु ॥ ४७ ॥

ततश्चित्रीयमाणोऽसौ हेमरत्नमयो मृगः ।
यथामुखीनः सीतायाः पुप्लुवे बहु लोपयन् ॥ ४८ ॥

तेनाऽऽचूषयद्रामं ८ मृगेण वि मृगलोचना ।
मैथिली विपुलोरस्कं प्रावृद्धुमृगाजिनम् ॥ ४९ ॥


 44. ‘‘But you, whose intent is extremely evil, are a coward that seeks shelter for ever ; and (you) always deny my merits and praise my enemies

 45. Hence I shall turn you, who deserve to be beheaded, into a corpse; or else, desirous of punishing those two forest dwellers, I shall force you to do what must be done.'"

 46. To him who had lifted his sharp sword, Marica, desirous of remaining alive and entreating (him) on account of fear, replied, I shall be confronting your enemy.

 47. Having become a deer, I shall allure away Rama and Laksmana who are addicted to hunting; and confronting the enemy you accomplish the task as per your desire.'

 48. Then that astonishing deer of gold and jewels leapt in front of Sita, fascinating (her) greatly.

 49. Desirous of wearing the deer-skin, the Mithila Princess, who had deer-like eyes, forced the broad-chested Rama to hunt that deer.
