No eye could be keener than his for perceiving a point of beauty wherever it may be detected. His similies are often so happy and applicable on all fours that you must feel lost in admiration. I could, if I had the time and the books at my disposal, cite at least one hundred examples of Kalidas's best similes and metaphors. But I content myself with just quoting from memory one which always lingers on my lips. He describes Sbakuntala in the company of Rishis like this: मध्येतपोधनानाम् किसलयमिव पांडुपत्राणाम् । Now can any one, I ask, sufficiently admire this beautiful simile and exhaust the points on which it gracefully rests ? The theme is tempting, and I would go on with this over a long space with great pleasure. But I must resist the temptation and wind up only with once more congratulating Mr. Padhye upon the good literary taste which must have been to him, as it has certainly been to me, a refreshing elixir in the persuit of other and often prosaic tasks.
