INTRODUCTION Ixxiii that of Sākaṭāyana. The word başkayani is interpreted by Svāmin, Sūrin and others as a cow whose calf is full grown, But Malli. following Säkaṭāyana says: 'ciraprasutagornama'. बष्कयेण नीता अनुगता बष्कयणीति शाकटायनव्युत्पत्त्या । बष्कयो नामैकवत्स- रवत्सः । (p. 596) Sākaṭāyana's views arc again referred to supplement Amara's statement that ardhanavam (half a boat) is neuter only; for the former mentions it as fem. also. अर्धनावमर्धनावीति हि स्त्रीनपुंसक्योर्दृश्यत इति शाकटायनः । (p. 164) Panini ordains the substitution of v for the i of varşabhu (frog) when a case affix beginning with a vowel follows (varṣābhvas ca). But Malli. adds that this holds good for the word karabhū (finger-nail) as well, as Sākaṭāyana sanctions it. 'दृन्पुनः .' इति शाकटायनशास्त्रे करभूशब्दस्यापि यञादेशः। (p. 172) The Kätantra system of grammar too is not neglected, for he quotes a sutra dyor govad vibhaktau' to justify the peculiar declension of sauḥ (Gauri) (p. 28). The profundity of his scholarship may be guaged by his close acquaintance with such works as the Samgitamakaranda of Narada, the grammatical comm. of Kaiyata, the Jaina work Dharmasarmabhyudaya, the Buddhist poem Karpi(pphi) nabhyudaya and a thorough mastery of the pañca-mahakavya-s. Extensive also is Malli.'s knowledge of medical authorities. He often cites Vaidyaka with special reference to Dhanvantari whom he quotes over twenty times, as well as the Yogaśataka, etc. The plant ikṣugandhā has a synonym in balvajäh which Amara says is mas. in gender and pl. in number. But Malli. points out that the word has been used by Patañjali in the singular. 'एकश्च बल्वजो बन्धनेऽसमर्थः' इत्यर्थवत्सूत्रे महाभाष्यप्रयोगदर्शन देकवचनान्त- त्वमपि । (p. 317)
