INTRODUCTION गदाग्रजो मुञ्जकेशो दाशार्हो दशरूपधृत् । (p. 17 ) इन्दिरा लोकमाता मा क्षीरोदतनया रमा । (p. 20) xxvii In the second Kända a whole verse, vipula gahvari.. has been added to synonyms of the earth (p. 185). The spurious character of these additions can be determined by the treatment accorded to them by well-known commentators. If they commented on them they may be taken as a genuine part of the text. 'This has been forgotten by Bhānuji in some places, but the Bombay ed. generally marks them as spurious.'¹ But other commentators such as Mukuța, Sūrin, Malli. and Bommaganți are very clear in such cases. They have left them out as spurious additions but have taken care to note doubtful cases (Sūrin, pp. 17, 24). Śrīharṣa, a late writer of the Telugu country, has written 6 a short work called Amarakhandana 2 assailing Amara's lexicon as poor in the words, alternate forms and gender indications '.3 Amara has failed to follow the principles laid down by himself at the beginning of his work. In the first place his synonyms are very meagre, a large number found in other lexicons having been omitted, e.g. he gives only Uccaiśravas, Mātali and Nandana for Indra's horse, charioteer and garden res- pectively whereas other lexicons give a number of other well- known names. (JOR, V, p. 17) The answer given by Amaraman dana against the charge is that Amara has taken, for his concise work, only words in greater currency. 1 loc. cit. 2 JOR, V, pp. 16-26, ed.
