INTRODUCTION The work seems to be a collection of synonyms, often giving the correct sounds of words and other forms of the same word.¹ But according to an anonymous commentary on the Ak., the lexicon of Vācaspati is named Nirnayadipikā.² Vyādi is the third name; his work being lost, it cannot be said definitely whether he is the author of the Samgraha mentioned in the Mahabhäsya or of the Utpalini mentioned by Purușottama in the Haravali. About the Samgraha Patañjali says in his Mahābhāṣya, संग्रहे एतत् प्राधान्येन परीक्षितम् ( I. 1. 1 ) on which Kaiyata gives the gloss granthaviseşe, which is further amplified by Nāgojibhaṭṭa as a work consisting of one hundred thousand verses. It is more probable that Vyādi's work is Utpalini as mentioned in the Häravalī, for quotations from Vyādi's work are frequently given by Svāmin and later commentators on Amara such as Malli. 6 'अमृतं दिवि खे मोक्षे ', 'यज्ञशेषेऽमृताशने' इत्युभयत्र व्याडिः (p. 3) ' किसलं स्यात् किसलयं पुंसि क्लीबे च पल्लवम्' इति व्याडिः (p. 224) xix But according to Sarvänanda,4 Vyadi's work, like that of Vararuci, deals with genders of words only.5 But Amara- candra 6 says that the Utpalini is a composition of Vyādi; for he cites twice in his Kavyakalpalatäparimala from the Utpalini with the words vyāḍikṛtotpalinimadhyāt?.? तन्त्राणि (ibid, p. 3 ) . 1 कृष्णः पाकः फलो • कृष्णपाकफल:, etc. Malli (p. 255). 2 JOR, Madras, VI, p. 272. 3 संग्रहो व्याडिकृतो लक्षश्लोकसंख्यको ग्रन्थ इति प्रसिद्धि: (CSS ed., p. 20). 4 Ţikasarvasva, TSS 38, I, p. 2. 5 'यतस्त्रिकाण्डोत्पलिन्यादीनि नाममात्रतन्त्राणि, व्याडिवररुच्यादिप्रणीतानि तु लिङ्गमात्र- 6 JOR, Madras, VI, p. 272. 7 Kk., GOS., Introd. p. xi.
