xviii AMARAKOŚA as Vācaspati, Vyāḍi and Bhāguri are mixed up with authors later than Amara, and hence the list is of no chronological value. More to the purpose is the statement of Keśava (A.D. 1660) in his Kalpadrukośa: कात्यवाचस्पतिव्याडिभागुर्यमरमङ्गलाः । 1 साहसाङ्कमहेशाद्या विजयन्ते जिनान्तिमाः ॥ Svāmin, the earliest available commentator on Amara, mentions the name of Katya respectfully, citing him a number of times, e.g. यत्कात्यः— आदाय मार्गशीर्षाच्च द्वौ द्वौ मासावृतुः स्मृतः । 2 (Kalavarga, p. 81) The name of his kośa seems to be Namamālā,³ for a line quoted by Vamana (8th cent. A.D.) in his Kavyalamkāra- sūtravṛtti (I. 3. 6) as Namamālāpratīkam, a portion of Namamālā, has been ascribed to Katya by Svāmin: यत्कात्यः— नीविराग्रन्थनं नार्या जघनस्थस्य वाससः। 5 The second name in the list, Vācaspati, is mentioned in the same line with Bhāguri and Vyāḍi by lexicographers like Purușottamadeva,6 Maheśvara7 and Hemacandra 8 and from a verse in the Haravali it appears that his work is Sabdarnava. शब्दार्णव उत्पलिनी संसारावर्त इत्यपि । कोशा वाचस्पतिव्याडिविक्रमादित्य निर्मिताः ॥ (V. 275) 1 Kk., GOS ed., p. 1, v. 2. 2 Ak., Poona ed., p. 35. 3 Kk., GOS ed., Introd. p. xiii. 4 A.
