xxviii ARYABHATTIYA f Elsewhere in the same work (com. on I. 3-4) he states that he was born on Monday, third tithi of the dark half of the month of Magha in Šaka 11 13, the Kali date for the day being 15,68,004. Further down, in another context in the same work, (com. on. ch. I. 5), he gives also the mean position of the Sun at the time of his birth, as computed by him: '''' जातो राश्यादिको रविमध्यम: १०-८-३० एवं मज्जन्मदिने सोमवारमध्याह्ने अर्कमध्यमो गणितः । Suryadeva's provenance References made by Suryadeva in his Laghunanasa-vyakhya go to show that he was a native of the Cola country in South India and wrote at Gangapura or Gangapuri, which may be identified with Gangai-konda-Colapuram (lat 11 13' N, long. 79° 30' E), on the basis of astronomical observations made at this place recorded by Suryadeva himself. Thus, under Laghumanasa, II. 1, he states that the equinoctial midday shadow at Gangapura is 23 angulas which corresponds to the latitude of 11.3. So also the ascensional differences and times of risings of the signs also correspond to this place.
