AMARAKOŚA स्वर्गे देवतादि, दिशि दिग्गजादि, काले उपरागादि, etc. for Amara's crisp mention of associated words (esām ca samgatam), unlike Malli. and Bhānuji. Sūrin realizes that readers generally remember the main topics only and hence he reminds them of the associated words such as naukā (boat) in dealing with Vārivarga. As variants in the text of Amara have crept in in large numbers in the course of centuries,¹ Sūrin has mentioned them even though he gives his own choice for adoption as the correct text. In explaining pāripārsvaka-s (attendants on the sun), Sūrin mentions the reading päripārsvaga-s (pāripärśvagāḥ iti va pathah), though the MS. Ks notes another reading päri- pārsvika-s (pāripärśvikā iti vā pāṭhaḥ, fn., p. 71). Again in the section on plants Amara gives kālā and sthālī as names of two plants. Sūrin here notes a number of readings and explains them: xxxvi कृष्णवृन्तत्वात् काला । रसाधारकुम्भत्वात् स्थाली । काचस्थालीति पाठे काचवर्णा स्थाली वृन्तमस्या अस्तीति काचस्थाली । कालस्थालीति पाठे कालवर्णस्थालीत्वात् कालस्थाली । साचस्थालीति पाठे सा च स्थालीति पदच्छेदः । (p. 248 ) An important reading mentioned by Sūrin is with reference to domestic animals discussed by Amara in gomahişyādikam padabandhanam. Sūrin says that there is a variant reading yadavam dhanam in the place of padabandhanam, and also explains the significance of that reading. यादवं धनमिति पाठे गोमहिष्यादिकं धनम् (p. 588) This reading is evidently based on the comm. Kamadhenu of Subhūticandra, as mentioned by Malli.¹ (p. 589). The god Brahma, the first in the Trinity, is called Viriñci as he proffers life to all: virinaktiti viriñcih (p. 14); or because he separates the different species of his creation: vicir prthagbhāve.
