For if I mingled not ever in action, unwearied, men all around would follow My path, O son of Pritha. (23)
यदि if ; हि indeed ; अहं ; न not; वर्तेयं should exist; जातु (always); कर्मणि in action ; अतंद्रितः unwearied; मम my ; वर्त्म path ; अनुवर्तते follow ; मनुष्याः men ; पार्थं 0 Partha ; सर्वशः everywhere.
उत्सीदेयुरिमे लोका न कुर्या कर्म चेदहम् ।
संकरस्य च कर्ता स्यामुपहन्यामिमाः प्रजाः ॥२४॥
These worlds would fall into ruin, if I did not per form action; I should be the author of confusion of castes, and should destroy these creatures. (24)
उत्सीदेयुः would be destroyed ; इमे these ; लोकाः worlds ; न not; कुर्या if (i) perform ; कर्म action; चेत् if ; अहं I; संकरस्य of confusion ; च and ; कर्ता author ; स्याम् (I) would be ; उपहन्याम् (I) would slay ; इमाः these ; प्रजाः peoples.
सक्ताः कर्मण्यविद्वांसो यथा कुर्वंति भारत ।
कुर्याद्विद्वांस्तथाऽसक्तश्चिकीर्षुर्लोकसंग्रहम् ॥२५॥
As the ignorant act from attachment to action,- O Bharata, so should the wise act without attachment, desiring the welfare of the world, (25)
सक्ताः attached ; कर्मणि in (to) action ; अविद्वांसः the unwise ; यथा as ; कुर्वंति act; भारत 0 Bharata ; कुर्यात् should act; विद्वान् the wise man ; तथा so ; असक्तः unattached ; चिकीर्षुः desiring to make ; लोकसंग्रहम् (see 20) the welfare of the world.
