- P. 12, 1. 8.—अत्रभवतः किल . This is said ironically of Gaņadâsa, who,
- we must suppose, used the simile at first to disparage his
- rival.
- P. 12, 1. 12. –समभ्यं पडिण्णादं 'Well challenged, ' a good challenge
- that . समथ्यं is reasonably.
- P. 12, 1,13.- प्रथमः कल्पः 'That is the best course to follow. Cf.

- P. 13, 1. 6.-Gs reading प्रतिद्वन्द्विनो for केनचित् is certainly worthy of
- attention.
- P. 13, 1. 8–राज्ञीशब्दभाजनम् / agreeing with आत्मानम् , which is always
- masculine singular, whatever the g€nder and number of the
- nouns it refers to.
- p. 13, 1. 10–भानोः परिग्रहादनल:. It is easy to see that this alludes
- to the supposed interest of the king in the cause of Haradatta,
- and the words चन्द्रोपि निशापरिगृहीत: to the queen's interest in
- the success of Ganadâsa.
- P.l3, 1, 12. –पीठमादिञम् . पीठमर्द means one who assists the Nâyaka,
- or lover, to obtain his mistress. And accordingly पीठमर्दिका
- means a woman who assists the Nâyikà, or the mistress, in
- her endeavours to gain her lover . The Pratâparudra says,
- तत्सहायाः (= नायकस्य सहायाः) पीठमर्दविटचेटविदूषकाः नायिकानुकूलने.
- And it defines पीठमर्द as being किंचिदूनः, ' somewhat short of
- stature:' See Pratapurudra, Nâyaka Prakarana, 40. In the
- present instance, also, the term पीठमर्दिका, as applied to the
