P. 9, 1. 10. –तन्त्रकारवचनम्, viz. that quoted; or supposed to be quoted,
by the minister in stanza 8. 'The Tantras do not usually teach
politics, but they enjoin practices and ceremonies connected
with the worship of Śakti. See Wilson's Essays on the Religion
of the Hindus, Vol. I., pp. 247-250. It is perhaps possible,
though by no means quite necessary, to understand तन्त्रकार in
the present passage generally in the sense of शास्त्रकार.
P. 10, 1. 10–-प्रभुः, predicated of सहायवानेव.
P. 10, 1. 14–व्यक्तिः. Cf. Raghuvaḿśa, I. 10
P. 10, 1. 15.त्वन्नीतिपादपस्य. 'The Nîti or intrigue here referred to
is the creating of a feud between the two teachers of music as
to their comparative merits, resulting in an actual exhibition of
their powers of teaching by a dramatic representation, which
gave the king an opportunity of seeing Mâlavikâ. Vidûshaka had
also given the Parivrâjikâ her cue
P. 11, 1. 12.–पुरुषाधिकारमिदं ज्योतिः, equivalent to एतंत्तुपुरुषाधिकारं ज्योतिः
= एष परुषः अधिकारः अधिकरणं स्थानं यस्य तत्. None of our MSS.
gives the apparently easier reading ‘पुरूषाकारं ज्योति: as found in
Tulberg's edition. On the contrary, cf the following, as read
by MS. G–‘महत् खलु पुरूषाधिकरणमिदं ज्योतिः’
P. 12, 1. 2–शिष्योपदेशकाले, ‘at this time of the day, when you ought
to be teaching your respective pupils.'
P. I2, 1. 3-तीर्थात् , ‘गुरोः‘from my preceptor:' तीर्थ is another name
for “guru,' because he is 'one to whom honour is due'. It is
not, I think, a proper name here, as Prof. Weber supposes.
P. 12, 1, 4–दत्तप्रयोगोस्मि ,' I have given lessons in the art of theatrical
representation,' i.e. I am an experienced teacher of the art .
प्रयोग has here the same sense as क्रिया in Act I., stanza I2.
