BASIC MATERIALS (n) CK Raja's edition of the first two Adhyayas of the First Astaka of Verkata Madhavas Bhusya published alongwith another commentary on the same portion by one Madhavabhatta, as Nos 22 and 61 of the Adyar Library Series in the years 1939 and 1947, respectively This edition was based on a single palm leaf manuscript XVII (1) FLA, Ravi Varma s edition, published from Trivandrum by the University of Travancore in the Trivandrum Sanskrit Series as No CXLVII in the year 1942 Covering the Third Adiyaya of the First Aştaka, it was just a further continuation of the aforesaid and was based on the same manuscript materials as had been used towards that edition But it is said that the (iv) Lakshmana Saraps edition m four parts published by Motilal Banarasidas The Parts IIII were issued from Lahore in the years 1939, 1940 and 1943, respectively, and the Part IV from Varanasi In 1955. These four parts cover the Bhasya upto the end of the 7th Mandala work had been completed up to the end of the 10th Mandala and that the press- copy of the remaining portion was arretrievably lost at Lahore at the time of the Partition in 1947 This edition is based on two original Malayalam palm leaf manuscripts alongwith such other materials as were available for its purposes in The learned Editor has spared no pains in making the best transcript or in print use of all these materials, so often so defective, towards producing a truly critical edition, copiously furnished with extremely useful text critical and comparative annotations and with the significant signals of query marks at numerous places which baffled all his efforts to decipher them to his satisfaction Certainly, the previous productions of Sambasiva Sastri, C K Raja and L A Ravi Varma dwindled into insignificance in comparison with this great, memorable achievement. B Manuscripts fa' Ms No 6191 m the V V Research Institute Library, Hosharpur, It is an undated palm leaf manuscript written in the Malayalam script It contains the Bhasja on the portion from I 1, 1 to VI, 61, 14 and again, from VIII 98, 1 to X, 114, 4 It consists of 294 folos (171x2), generally, with 11 lines in a page and 100 letters in a line and with leaves regularly numbered This is the same manuscript as had been lent to L Sarup and utilised by hum for his edition under the name 'D which indicated the DA-V College Section of the This is a very defective manuscript, abounding in V. V RI Library corruptions The Devanagari transcript from a palm leaf manuscript in the Government Oriental Manuscripts Library, Madras, got prepared for the V V Research Institute in the year 1926 It contains the portion from I, 10, 3 to V, 4, 8 and from VI, 62, 1 to X, 191, 4. Fortunately, the whole portion missing m the fat is supplied by this transcript Thus, between themselves, and f share the unique importance of supplying the complete text of this Bhaga which was not available to any of its four previous editors, namely, Sambasıva Sastri, L. A Ravi Varma, CK Raja and L. Sarup
