BASIC MATERIALS The Editer, however, has not given any detailed information regarding these manuscripts He has also not indicated any variant readings from his two basic manuscripts nor has he asterisked what he has incorporated in the text of the Commentary as hus own surmised contribution In many places, he has failed to take due notice of the defective readings copied out from the manuscripts Added to these reasons, the presence of plentiful printing mistakes makes the production, altogether, unreliable XIV () The edition which was prepared by LA Ravi Varma, and published in 1942 as the No CXLVII of the Truandrum Sanskrit Series of the University of Travancore It contains the Suktas from 1, 33, 1 to 1, 46, 14 comprising the Third Adhyaya of the First Astaka, being a further continuation of the aforesaid edition of Sambasiva Sastri It was based on four manuscripts, designated in the foot notes as , ,and Ordinarily, the vartant readings from these manuscripts have been given in the foot notes The Editor, however, does not seem to have thought it necessary to give any detailed information regarding his basic manuscripts The first three, of course, must have been the same as had been made use of in FIFA B Manuscripts The transcript which is preserved in the Adyar Library, Madras under its No. 38 C 23 This contams the Bhasya on I, 1, 1 to I, 56, I and I, 62, 1 to I, 121, 15, the portion I, 1, 1 to 1, 32, 15 representing the Shorter Version and the remaining portion the Longer Version The portion of the Bhasya from 1, 56, 2 to 1, 61, 16 is missing in it as in the Grantha manuscript mentioned under above, but, still, it seems to have been copied from a different original in that it gives the Bhagya on I, 32, 18 which is missing in the said Grantha manuscript Fa The Devanagari transcript which was copied out in 1959 from ad onginal palm leaf manuscript, preserved in the Government Oriental Manuscript Library, Madras under its No R 5334 It belongs to the Manuscript Section of the V V R Institute Library, Hoshiarpur as its No 635 and contains the Bhasya on I, I, 1 to I, 32, 15 according to the Shorter Version f Another Devanagari transcript which is preserved in the VV Research Institute Library, Hoshiarpur, under its No 4365 It is comparatively older in appearance It contains the Bhasya on I, 1, 1 to I, 15, 11 This agrees fully with the Trivandrum edition of the Longer Version and seems to have been copied from the same original f manuscript on which the said edition was mainly based, all the lactance found in the one being found in the other also It was copied out by some able scribe in the Devanagari script on old paper and contains 77 pages in all As a result of the scrbal improvements, it occasionally records better readings The onginal palm leaf manuscript, in the Malayalam Script, of the Longer Version which is deposited in the Trivandrum Manuscript Library under its No. C, 434 It contains the Bhasya from 1, 1, 1 to 1, 56, 1 and 1, 62, 1 to 1, 112, 25 This is the same manuscript as was utilized under the common designation by both Sambasıva Sastri and LA
