of Indian grammarians, and I have attempted to carry on
discussions on modern critical lines in the language of in-
digenous Vaiyakaranas themselves. Whenever it appear-
ed to me that Panini's nomenclature was deficient 1 or
too symbolic and meaningless, 2 I have not hesitated
to make use of new terms, directly 3 or indirectly used
by Panini himself or earlier grammarians 5, or even
to coin new terms myself 6, to translate into Sanskrit
the terminology of Western Orientalists.

Even today, hundreds of students in several
parts of India commit to memory Panini's Ashtadhyayi,
and undergo an elaborate course in the Siddhantakaumudi
with its commentaries, and commentaries on commentaries,
making the science of grammar their life-study. Some of
these students under this time-honoured system of train-
ing attain to a high degree of eminence indeed in the Sci-
ence of Language. But they confine their labours to within
the Paninia system and content themselves with making
a critical examination of its ground work, engaging in
scholastic discussions about its underlying principles, and
attempting to discover short-cuts in the process of word-
formation propounded by it. If this work of mine can
induce such students of the orthodox class to divert their
energies in the more useful direction of a historical investi-
gation of Sanskrit grammar, I will most gladly consider
that my labours have been amply rewarded.
