संयुक्त (1) closely connected; cf. गृहपतिना संयुक्ते ञ्यः P. IV. 4.90; (2) joint, conjoint; the term is used frequently in connection with two or more consonants in juxta- position; cf. अननुस्वारसंयुक्तम् T. Pr. XXII. 15.

संयोग connection in general; the word is used as a technical term in the grammar of Panini, in the sense of two or more consonants coming closely together unsepara- ted by any vowel; cf.हलोनन्तराः संयोगः cf P. I. 1.7; cf also अनन्तरं संयोगः V. Pr. I. 48.

संयोगादिलोप the elision of the first of the conjunct consonants if it is स् or क्, provided the conjunct con- sonants are at the end of a word or followed by a consonant which is not a semi-vowel nor a nasal; e. g. तक्, तष्टवान् from the root तक्ष्; cf. स्कोः संयोगाद्योरन्ते च P. VIII. 2.99.

संयोगान्तलोप the elision of the final of the conjunct consonants when they are at the end of a word provided they are not formed of र् as the first member and any consonant except स् as the second member; e.g- गोमान्, ऊर्क् etc.; cf. संयोगान्तस्य लोपः,रात्सस्य P.VIII.2.23,24.

संवरण lit. concealment; slurring over a consonant by practically merging its sound into that of the follow- ing one; the technical term अंभि- निधान is also used in the same sense; e. g. षट् द्वा द्वा; cf. संधारणं संवरणं श्रुतेश्च R. Pr. VI. 5.

संवादचिन्तामणि name of a small treatise on roots and their mean- ings written by a grammarian named इन्द्रदत्तोपाध्याय who has also written a commentary on the Sabdakaustubha called कौस्तुभगुण and सिद्धान्तकौमुदीगूढफक्किकाप्रकाश.

संवार one of the external efforts in the production of a sound when the gullet is a little bit contracted as at the time of the utterance of the third, fourth and the fifth of the class-consonants; cf. कण्ठबिलस्य संकोचः संवारः Uddyota on P. I. 1.9.

संविज्ञात conventional; lit. known widely among the people, as a result, of course, of convention; cf. संविज्ञातानि तानि यथा गौरश्वः पुरुषो हस्तीति Nir. I. 12.

संविज्ञान apprehension; cf. बहुव्रीहौ तदगु- णसंविज्ञानमपि.

संवृत lit. covered or concealed;name of an internal effort in the produc- tion of sound which is accompani- ed with a laryngeal hum; cf. संवृतौ घोषवान्; cf also ह्रस्वस्यावर्णस्य प्रयोगे संवृतम् । प्राक्रियादशायां तु विवृतमेव S.K.on P.I.1.9;cf. also तत्रेात्पत्तेः प्राभ्यदा जिह्वाग्रो- पाग्रमध्यमूलानि तत्तद्वर्णोत्पत्तिस्थानानां ताल्वादीनां समीपमेव केवलं अवतिष्ठन्ते तदा संवृतता Sabdakaus on P. I. 1.9.

संश्लिष्ट very closely held together just as the sound of the consonant र् in the vowel क; cf. ऋलृवर्णे रेफलकारौ संश्लिष्टौ अश्रुतिधरौ एकवर्णौ where Uvvata has explained the word संश्लिष्ट as एकीभूत; cf Uvvata on V. Pr. IV. 148.

संसर्गे lit. contact, connection; (1) contact of the air passing up through the gullet and striking the several places which produce the sound, which is of three kinds, hard, middling and soft; cf. संसर्गो वायुस्थानसंसर्गः अभिवातात्मकः स त्रिविधः । अयःपिण्डवद्दारुपिण्डवदूर्णापिण्डवदिति । तदुवत- मापिशलशिक्षायाम् । स्पर्शयमवर्णकरो वायुः अय:- पिण्डवत्स्थानमापीडयति । अन्तस्थावर्णकरो दांरु- पिण्डवत् । ऊष्मस्थस्वरवर्णकर ऊर्णापिण्डवत् com. on.
