ancient grammars for such affixes and others which do not allow the substitution of guna or vrddhi for the preceding vowel; the term is also used for the letters क्, ग् and ङ् when they are mute, serving only the purpose of pre- venting guna or vrddhi; cf. मृजेर- जादौ संक्रमे विभाषा वृद्धिमारभन्ते M. Bh. on P. I.1.3. Vart. 10.

संक्षिप्तसार name of a complete gra- mmar-work written by क्रमदीश्वर for facility of study. This grammar appears to have been written before the time of कैयटं or हेमचन्द्र, as can be seen from the popular stanza परेत्र पाणिनयिज्ञाः केचित् कालापको- विदाः । एके विश्रान्तविद्याः स्युरन्ये संक्षिप्तसा- रका; ॥

संख्या (1)a numeral such as एक,द्वि etc. In Panini Astadhyayi, although the term is defined as applicable to the word बहु, गण and words ending with the tad. affixes वतु and डति, such as तावत् , कति and the like, still the term is applied to all numerals to which it is seen appli- ed by the people; cf M. Bh. on P. I. 1.23 also Pari. Sek. Pari. 9; (2) numerical order; cf. स्पर्शेष्वेव संख्या V. Pr. I. 49.

संख्यातानुदेश application respective- ly of terms stated in the उद्देश्य and विधेय portions in their numerical order when the stated terms are equal in number; cf. यथासंख्यम- नुदेशः समानाम् P. 1.3.10; cf. also पञ्चागमास्त्रय अागमिनः वैषम्यात् संख्यातानुदेशो न प्राप्नोति M. Bh. Ahnika 2.

संख्यान enumeration; statement; cf. एकाजनेकाज्ग्रहणेषु चावृत्तिसंख्यानादनेकाच्त्वं भविष्यति, M.Bh. on Sivasutra l Vart. 10.

संख्यापूर्व with a numeral word placed first or at the beginning; a term used for defining the Dvigu com-

pound; cf. संख्यापूर्वो द्विगुः P. II. 1.52.

संख्येय lit, those that are to be count- ed; objects of enumeration; cf. बहुव्रीहौ संख्येये डजबहुगणात् P. V. 4.73; cf. also अथवा संख्या नाम इयं परप्रधाना । संख्येयमनया विशेप्यम्, M. Bh. on P. II. 2.24 Vart. 9.

संगतार्थ a word unit where the senses of two words are mixed together completely as in a compound word such as राजपुरुषः etc.; cf संगतार्थे समर्थम् M. Bh. on P. II. 1.1. Vart. 4.

संगम combination of things coming one after another; cf. उदात्तपूर्वोप्य- नुदात्तसंगमः where the term is used with respect to a combination of grave syllables; cf. also व्यञ्जनसंगमं संयोगं विद्यात्, R. Pr. XVIII. 19.

संगृहीतincluded; the word is often used in the Mahabhasya in conne- ction with instances which are covered by a rule, if interpreted in a specific way; cf. अथ निमित्तेs- भिसंबध्यमाने यत्तदस्य योगस्य मूर्धाभिषिक्तमु- दाहरणं तदपि संगृहीतं भवति M. Bh. on P. I. 1. 57; cf. also एकार्थीभावे सामर्थ्ये समास एकः संगृहीतो भवति, M. Bh. on P. II. 1.1.

संग्रह name of a very vast work on grammar attributed to an ancient grammarian Vyadi who is sup- posed to have been a relative of Panini; cf. सेग्रहेस्तमुपागते Bhartr- hari's Vakyapadiya cf. also संग्रह- प्रतिकञ्चुकेः cf. संग्रहो नाम लक्षश्लोकात्मको त्याडिकृतो ग्रन्थः । Some quotations only are found from the Sam- graha in grammar works, but the work is lost long ago.
