( 17 ) the Ráj family, the present Rájá, Natavara Mardaráj, Bhrs- maravara Ráy being a son of Chandrasekhara's eldest cousin.* The full name of the author is Chandrasekhara Simha Samanta Harichandana Mahápátra, Harichandana and Mahápátrs are mere titles bestowed by the Rájé of Puri, whose influence upon the destinies of the Rájás of Orisga is still ag unbounded 29 was that of the Pope of Rome on the vassals of medieval Europe. He is styled Samanta as befits a member of the Ráj family. In Orissa, however, he is best known by the familiar name of Patháni Sánta (corrupted from Pátbán and Samanta), a nick- Dame given him by his parents on account of their first two children having died in infancy. At an early age Chandrasekhara received instruction in Sanskrit. For some time he studied Sanskrit Grammar, Smfitis and Purágas, logic and medicine, and read all the important Kávyas in the original. His education has thus been varied and many-sicked. But it has stood him in much better stead than the modern elaborately arranged curriculum of the English schools, through which he would have been thrust, had be lived nearer & town.
