PREFACE

IT is well known that there are several editions of the great epic, Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, with or without commentary. But an authoritative edition of this great work is under preparation in one of our sister Institutes, the Oriental Institute, Baroda.

This Institute therefore, has undertaken to bring out a critical edition of the same with the Amrtakataka commentary of the Madhavayogi (about 1700 A.D.). 'Amṛtakataka' is brought to light for the first time.

Vidwan Sri K. S. Varadacharya, one of the Research Assistants of our Institute, has edited the work ably. He has also discussed, in brief, the date of the commentator and the special features and importance of the commentary. I wish to state that it is also intended to give the critical introduction and appreciation of the same in a separate volume after the whole work is published. The second volume is under preparation.

My thanks are due to the authorities of the Palace Saraswati Bhandara, Mysore and Oriental Manuscripts
