EDITOR'S NOTE The first part of the Mūla-madhyamaka-kārikā of Nāgārjuna, consisting of first five chapters, was edited by me in 1957. For certain difficulties I had to take out only relevant portions from the commentary of Candrakirti and the English and Bengali translations of the kārikās were also not expository. That was my first attempt in the field of Buddhist Philosophy. I therefore propose to edit again those parts in the present pattern. Herein the full commentary of Candrakirti has been inserted and attempts have been made to make the translations of the kārikās convincing even for the ordinary readers. I have enough reasons to feel that my respected teacher Pandit Sri Bidhu Bhusan Tarka-Vedanta-Sankhyatirtha, Adhyapaka in Samkhya, Sanskrit College, Calcutta, has lent grace to this text by writing a Sanskrit Commentary named Mañīju- Vyākhyā to the kārikās. I am grateful to him for this. In this connection I gratefully acknowledge the guidance I received from him as a student of Buddhist Philosophy. I am deeply indebted to my respected teacher, Dr. Gauri Nath Sastri M.A., P.R.S. D.Litt. Principal, Sanskrit College, Calcutta, for the interest evinced by him in the progress of my studies. I also express my gratefulness to Dr. Anukul Chandra Banerjee M.A., LLB. Ph.d. for the help received from him in the progress of the work. Sanskrit College Calcutta. 1st. July 1962.
