INTRODUCTION

Saipafarirakara work with which Drksita was thoroughly familiares. This misquotation, therefore, has to be accounted for as one of the possible oversights, for which he seeks the indul. gence of his scholarly readers in the apologetic verselp at the end of the Siddhantal¢8asamigraha ; or the expression ityed . artiEdirudhah " 170 may be the result of some scribal corruption in the hanuscripts; or this expression has to be explained by understanding Drksita to mean that the idea contained in Mandana's text :s in agreement with Suresvara's views as expressed in his Vartika and any conflict with this idea would amount to confict with the Vartika. It may be noted here that the last explanation suggested above may be supported by a reference to VidyFranya's Vartikasara, and Vyasatirtha's Nyayirta,शरू which draw pointed attention to the agreement between Suresvara and Mandana in respect of the idea embodied in the line "Sarun pratyayab¢dy od Further, the Dvaita tradition, as recorded in Dvaita-afdanta works, clearly differentiates Man¢nna and Suresvara and this is quite evident from the manner in which Vyasatirtha quotes7 Mandana, in his Nyayamurta4, as holding a certain view in a previous sentenceand in the next sentence quotes Suresvara, as a different advaitic writer and as holding a very similar view. Madhusudana-sarasvati and Brahmananda sarasvatr nowhere equate Mandana with Suresvara and assume in all their works that Mandana and Suresvara were two dis tinct individuals. This is quite clear from the manner in which the Vadatakalpalatika quotes' : the Vartika and Brahmansiddha in successive sentences, as works by two different authors on Advaita and sets forth Suresvara's Vartika in sharp opposition' 78 to Mandana's bhavadoarita or Sadaurita. This is also clear from the way in which the Advaitasiddha, the Adoaritarataraksara's , the Laghuvandrika and the Gurugandrika refer to Map¢ana

and his views on advaita. It is also worthy of notice that
