A ground-plan of the Vyavaharakāṇḍa mon to it and the earlier expressions, " वत्" and "शेषं-वत्" have been respectively used ; e. g. स्मृचवत्', 'शेषं स्मृचवत्'. 6 3 (9) A semi-colon marks a close of the reference and the v.l. of each work, and a full point is added after all works quoted in connection with a text, have been ex- hausted. · If a text recurs in a work and the same v. 1. occurs in all the quotations, the references to pages are separated by means of commas; e.g. सवि. ४८,५२, ४५०. A colon has been used between a v. 1. and the reference when the same text appears with a v. l. on different pages; e. 8. सवि. ५२ वाद (भाग ) : ४५०. (10) The same text is quoted by differ- ent treatise writers under the names of different Rişis; in such cases the text has been quoted under the name of the Rişi to whom it has been attributed by the majority of the early treatise-writers; while the Rigi to whom the modern writers attribute it are mentioned in the foot- notes. When a text, on the other hand, is attributed by some of the early treat- ises to a certain Risi and by others to another, it has been regarded as of both. When a text has been quoted by the early writers without mention of a name and by a single modern writer to a specified Risi, it has been regarded as his. (12) The treatise-writers attribute a text to several Rişis, e. g. to Narada and Brahaspati or to Manu, Narada, Harita and Baudhayana. In such xiii cases the text has been regarded as com- ing from each one of the Ris'is. (13) Texts which have been quoted as coming from no specified sage but merely with words like इति स्मरणं, स्मृतिः, स्मृत्यन्तरम्, have been quoted under the head स्मृत्यन्तरम्. (14) Texts quoted neither as from a specific sage nor as स्मरणं, स्मृतिः स्मृत्यन्तरम्, have been quoted under the heading “अनिर्दिष्टकर्तृकवचनम् " and are indicated in the foot-notes by the sign (=), which shows that the provenance is not specified. in (15) A v. 1 is given the place where the commentary quotation contains a reference to it with the words f पाठान्तरम्, इत्यन्यः पाठः or इत्यपि पाठ:. (16) In the section of Dayabhaga the Balambhatti on the two stanzas, II, 135 and II, 145 which covers a considerable number of pages has been quoted in the usual way with figures for chapter and verse and also with figures for pages. (17) No. v. 1 have been given in the case of synonyms of the type of तटाक- तडाक, शस्य-सस्य, लोष्ट-लोष्ठ, ऋक्थ-रिक्थ, चोर-चौर, मृन्मय मृण्मय, कोष-कोश. (18) No. v. 1. has been given in the case of alternative forms for Samdhis, e. g. नामोष्ठ-नासौष्ठ. (19) References to the passages, from the Agnipurana and the S'ukraniti, which were similar to the works of other Rigis have been made to the respective Rişis. And those that were different have been independently quoted.
