Every student of Kalidasa knows that he was a: worshipper of Shiva. All his dramas Religion & open with a prayer to Shiva. But in Philosophy his works such as Raghuvamsha of Kalidasa ( Canto 10 ) and Kumar-Sambhava ( Canto 2) prayers are offered lo Brahma and Vishnu too, which would be acceptable to the followers of any sect among the Hindus. Thus the Shaivism of Kalidas was of a non-sectari... an character, which though it regarded Shiva as the highest Deity, yet had room for worship of other gods and goddesses in Kashmir. Pandit Lachmidhar Kalla says in his Delhi University Lectures that in the description of vari-- ous schools of Shaivism given by Madhavacharya in his Sarva-Darshana-Sangraha, he describes- "Pratyabhijna Darshana" or "recognition system" which corresponds to the type of Shaivism repre- sented by Kalidasa and which was essentially monistic in its character. A brief summary of the system of Pratyabhijna Philosophy is given in appendix A, in the words of Prof. Kalla.
