( 4 ) thus no unaniimity exists among antiquarians regarding his date and birth place. His date has been placed somewhere between 300 B. C. and 11th Century A. D. Sir Willims Jones is of opinion that Kalidasa must have flourished in the 1st Century 3. C., while Indian Scholars such as Dr. Bhau Daji, Pandit, Telang, Sir Bhandarkar, Pathak place his date in the latter half of the 6th century A. D. I do not propose in this volume to review or to discuss the interesting and elaborate arguments adduced by each scholar in support of his theory. Suffice it o say that the balance of authorities is in favour of the view that the great Poet lived at the end of the 5th or in the begining of the 6th Century A. D. The same uncertainty prevails as regards his birth place. Owing to numerous references made in his works to the city of Ujjain, and to Kings Vikramaditya and Bhoja, he is said to have been born either at Dhar or at Ujjain, in Malva. While according to Dr. Bhau Daji, and Pandit Lachmi- dhar Kalla who recently delivered scholarly lectures on the birth.place of Kalidasa at the Delhi university, the place where Kalidas was born and bred was Kashmir. The result of the discussion appears to be that Kalidasa though born and bred up in Kashmir in his early years must have resided a later years at the Court of the Kings of Ujjain or Dhar. The following is a summary of the arguments lowing Kashmir to be the birth place of Kalidasas as given by Pandit Lachmidhar Kalla.
