xlviii ĀRYABHATÎYA We learn from the above that Yallaya was the son of Sridhararya and was a pupil of Suryacarya" son of Baladitya. This Śrīdhara (14th15th cent.) is, obviously, different from his namesake Sridhara (c. A.D. 900) who wrote the Patiganita and the Trisatika. Similarly, Suryacarya (14th-15th cent.) is different from Suryadeva Yajvan (b. 119 i), and is the author of Ganakananda, Daivajiabharana and Daivajiabhusana. A closing verse of his commentary Kalpalata on the Suryasiddhanta supplies the additional information that he belonged to the Kasyapagotra and that his grandfather's name was also Yallaya. Yallaya was a native of Skandasomesvara, which lay to the southeast of the renowned temple-town of Srisaila in the Telugu Country.* He indicates in his supplementary commentary on A., iii. 6 that he composed the work at Skandasomesvara, of which place he gives the measure of the equinoctial midday shadow as 3 angulas and the equinoctial midday hypotenuse as 125 angulas. These measurements specify a place having a latitude of 15' 30' N. Skandasomesvara is also stated to be 36 yojanas from the Hindu prime meridian (according to the reckoning of the Suryasiddhanta' which corresponds to 4° 5' to the east of the said meridian. 1.
