शैशिरीय recital of the Rgveda in the school named after SiSira, a pupil of Sakalya. शैषिक remaining, or remnant; the term is used with reference to a tad. affix prescribed in senses other than those mentioned before the rule शेषे P. IV. 2.92; cf. शैषि- कान्मतुबर्थीयाच् शैषिको मतुबर्थिकः । सरूपः प्रत्ययो नेष्टः सन्नन्तान्न सनिष्यते । शौण्डादि a class of words headed by the word शौण्ड which are compo- unded with a noun in the locative case to form a locative tatpurusa compound; e. g. अक्षशौण्डः, अक्षधूर्तः etc.; cf. Kas. on P.II.1.40. शौनक a great ancient Vedic scholar who is believed to have written the Rk. Pratisakhya, which is said to be common for the two main branches of the Rgveda but which at present represents, in fact, all the different branches of the Rgveda. शौनकप्रातिशाख्य a popular name of the well-known Pratisakhya of the Rgveda, named ऋक्प्रातिशाख्य as well as ऋग्वेदप्रातिशाख्य. शौनकादि a class of words headed by the word शौनक to which the tadd- hita affix इन् ( णिनि ) is added in the sense of 'instructed by', provi- ded the word so formed is a por- tion of what is looked upon as a part of the sacred Vedic Litera- ture; cf. शौनकेन प्रोक्तमधीयते शौनकिनः, वाजसनेयिनः cf Kas. on P.IV. 3.106. श्चुत्व the substitution of the palatal consonants श्,च्,छ्,ज्, झ् and ञ् respec- tively for the similar consonants स्, त् , थ् , द् , ध् and न् of the dental class; cf. स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः P.VIII.4.10. श्तिप्'the syllable ति applied to the Vikarana-ending form of a root to denote a root for a gramma- tical operation. tion of a root with श्तिप् added, shows that the root of the parti- cular class or conjugation shown, is to be taken and not the same root belonging to any other conjuga- tion; cf. इक्श्तिपौ धातुनिर्देशे; e.g. अस्यतिवक्तिख्यातिभ्योऽङ् P.III. 1. 52. Although operations prescribed for a primary root are applicable to a frequentative root when the fre- quentative sign य has been omitt- ed, operations prescribed for a root which is stated in a rule with ति ( श्तिप् ) added to it, do not take place in the frequentative roots;cf. श्तिपा शपानुबन्धेन ... पञ्चैतानि न यङ्लुकि. श्नम् a vikarana or conjugational sign of the agama type to be inse- rted after the last vowel of the roots of the seventh conjugation ( रुधादि ); e.g. रुणद्धि, भिनत्ति etc.; cf. रुधादिभ्यः श्नम् P.III.1.78. श्ना a vikarana or conjugational sign of the ninth conjugation, to be added to roots headed by क्री be- fore the Sarvadhatuka affixes; e.g. क्रीणाति; cf. क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना. P.III.1.81. श्ना is added optionally with श्नुः ( नु ) to the roots स्तम्भ्, स्तुम्भ्, स्कम्भ् , स्कुम्भ् and स्कु. e.g.स्तभ्नाति, स्तभ्नोति, स्कुभ्नाति, स्कुभ्नोति etc ; cf. P.III.1.82. श्नु a vikarana or a conjugational sign to be placed after the roots headed by सु (i.e. roots of the fifth conjugation) as also after the root श्रु when श्रु is to be changed into शृ, and the roots अक्ष् and तक्ष्; e.g. सुनोति, सुनुते; cf. स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः P.III. l.73.
