owing to the special attention paid by the Western scholars to Oriental Studies during the latter half. of the last century, our scholars were awakened to a sense of this defect. A number of Indian scholars. began to devote their attention to the uphill task. of unveiling the past by making a special study. of oriental languages.And weare glad to state that their efforts in this direction have met with succeess. A mass of numismatic and paleographic evidence has been brought to bear upon the solution of the vexed question regarding the personal history of Kalidasa and the age in which he lived. But inspite of the laborious and laudable efforts of Oriental Scholars-hoth Eastern & Western in finding out a solution of these vexed problems, they have not yet reached the region of certainty Taking avantage of this uncertainty', the anthor- ship of several productions of inferior quality is foisted upon Kalidasa. After careful investigations and critical analysis by scholars it is now agreed generally that the following seven works, alone are the products of the master-mind 0f; Kalidas:1. '1) Shakuntala, 2) Vikramorvashiya, (3) Malavikagnimtira, 14 ) Raguvamsha, (5) Kumar- sambhava, !6) Megaduta, and (7) Ritu--Sanhara. Kalidasa himself his observed reticence in his works about his own personality and the age he lived in. For the purposes of investigations the scholars have, therefore, to draw upon the materials supplied in his works, the accounts furnished by foreign travellers, inscriptions, nunism ties and upon every other, available- Material. calculated to help them in that direction.
