1. 9.] PRASNOPANISHAD-BHASHYA 9 Harinan: Harim, Vişnu is the meaning. The use of the Ford Hari with the n-ending is Vedic Vartamānań: Following; in other words being His body on account of his being dependent upon Him (for all his behaviour) Sahasra-rasmiņ: possessing knowledge of many things prajānām: of the creatures, immovable and movable, pranah: supporter, Süryah : Bright as the Sun esah: this soul šatadhā: assuming egoity in respect of different kinds of bodies such as god, man etc, udayati : arises from the state of deep sleep (suşupti) or rises up at the time of creation. I. 9. Samoatsaro vai prajapatis tasyāyane daksi- nan cottaram ca. Tad ye ha vai tad iştāparts krtam ity upäsate te Candramasam eva lokam abhijayante. Ta eva punaravartante tasmad eta rsayah prajākāmā dakşinam prati- padyante. Eşa ha vai rayir yah pitryanah. The year indeed is Prajāpati. This has two ayanas (paths), the Southern and the Northern. So those who devote themselves to sacrifices, constructions (of tanks) and doing (gifts) (istāpurta.krta) win the world of the Moon: and those alone return (to the world of Birth). Therefore those seers desirous of progeny take up the Southern path. Rayi indeed is that which is the path of the fathers.
