PREFACE In 1957, our Manuscript Editing and Research Department undertook to publish the Samhita and the Pada-texts of the Rgveda alongwith the critical editions of the Commentaries on it by the three Pre-Sayana scholiasts, namely, Skandsvamin, Udgitha, and Venkatamadhava and, also, of the Summary by Mudgala of the Commentary by Sayana, practically, extracting the entire body of the latter except the details of ritualistic application (viniyoga) and grammar. The Volumes II and III of this work containing the Suktas 81-191 of the Mandala I and the Mandalas II and III, respectively, were issued in 1963 being followed, in 1964, by the Volumes IV-VI carrying the texts, as available, to the end of the Sukta 45 of the Mandala X. The Volume I supplying the first 80 Saktas of the Mandala I and Volume VII containing the Suktas 46-191 of Mandala X were issued in 1965. The present Volume which is the VIII and last one, contains as ready-reference tools, the Indices I-V pertaining to: (1) The Mantras, (2) The Padas, (3) The Rsis, (4) The Devatas und (5) Chandas respectively. The Pada-Index (g) as included here substantially differs in its design from our another kindred work entitled A Grammatical Word-Index to the Rgveda, which was issued in 1963 in our Shantakuti Vedic Series as its Volume XVI. The latter work reproduced the entire technique of grammatical categorisation and consolidation as well as the system of accentuation which had been formulated for the purpose of and followed in the 16 Parts constituting the Volumes I-V of our A Vedic Word-Concordance (1935-65). But the present Padanukramantka follows, though with a few substantial innovations, the Rgveda-padanukramani which having been published by the twin progenitors of our Institute, namely, Svamis Vishveshvaranand and Nityanand in 1907, had since long gone out of print and, on account of its own usefulness for purposes of ready reference, been in demand.
