NTRODUCTION X11 4. Position of the Sun in the different quadrants of the Ecliptie:-In the problem of determination of the “f bhajah%. → of the Sun from his Declination, the question whether the Sun is in the first, the second, the third or the fourth quadrant of the Ecliptic has been solved by Bhaskaracऔryya by a reference to Seasons (oide tt-variantumm, so rich in poetic beauty). But Kamalakara found fault with this roundabout method and gave a more direct rule, depending on the decrease or increase Q{ the mid-day shadow as compared with the equinoctial shadow This rule, hitherto attributed to Kamalakara, can now be braced bhe Sadhalgtd-Sekhard of Sripati (Ch. IV, Slokas 70-71) 5. Precession of the Equinoxes :-It is well-known that Maijala was the author of the rules for the fprecession of the equinoxes * (quoted by Bhaskaracवtyya, possibly from his B?htmmousan). We had naturally expected to find in the Siddhanta-Scord of Srtpati (who was intermediate in time between Mujala and Bhaskaracaryya) a development or at least a notice of such rules. But, Sripati, as mentioned before, has mainly followed Brahmagupta and Lalla, and does not give any such rules Sripati, however, was not ignorant of the pheno linenon, as, in his Dhruva-mdasa (a , Karaja, or a practical manual), he has given the same rules as were given earlier by Mujj¥la. On account of the inherent difficulties mentioned above and of the vast proportions the work was assuming, it has been thought advisable to divide the work into two Parts, and to issue immediately the first of these Parts, comprising the first ten Chapters (divided into twelve Sections); which contain purely Astronomical matter. This will be followed by the second Part, consisting of the remaining eight Chapters and covering about ne-third of the whole treatise, containing arithmetical and algebraical operations, and discussions on the sphere, the astrono. mical instruments and other minor details of astronomy .
