Svetaketu vas intelligent and shrewd enough to understand all this and implored his father that he himself might teach him the great truth. The father readily consented and taught him. This is the story which introduces the Sadvidyc contained in the sixth chapter of the Chandogya up- nishat. This is meant for telling us that though born in good family and with all facilities available, boys turn to be indifferent and averse to learning. The elders however should take all care to make them learned ones. १ । Uddalaka begins his teaching with the declaration <Boy, the existent alone was al! this previously, only one without a second. Explaining the exclusive "alone ; he then said : “Here so:me say that non-existent alone was this previously, only one without a second. But this is an impossible view. How could the exis tent arise from the non-existent ? Vo see the world is one that exists. The cause of the world that exists must have been existent. Can a thing come into existence out of nothing? If there is no clay there will be no pot. So the cause of an existing thing must be an existent one. This rule has no exception One school of Buddhist philosophy holds the ex treme view that void alone is the ultimate truth. But this is quite untenable.
