COMMENTARY: Atha : indicates the beginning of a new seNtence (topic). Ekaya : By a certain nādi urdhvaḥ: upward udanaḥ: upward moving breath punyena : because of merit punyam lokam: the world of Suarga etc. papena : because of demerit papam: to the world of Naraka (hell) ubhābhyām: by both these, merit and demerit manuşyalokam: to the human world nayati : loads. The answer to the question How dividing himseif does the breath get established', begins with "Just as the sovereign" and closes with "To the human world because of both." In the middle of this answer to the fourth question By which does he go up' is given in the passage Then by a certain nādi the breath as upward-moving udāna because of merit leads to the good world." III. 8. Adityo ha vai bāhyah prāna udaynty esa hy enam cākşuşam prānam anugrhnānaḥ. Prthivyām ya devatā saisa puruşasyäpanam avastabhyantara yad ākāśah sa samano vayur vyānaḥ Verily the outer prāna rises up as the Sun (Aditya) ener gising the breath in the eye. That god who is on the earth that is apana of man Thai air which is in the midregion is the samăna. The wind (is) vyana.
