English: Chitradurga fort was built in stages between the 11th and 13th century by Hindu dynasties, and later served as an important fort for the Vijayanagara Empire. It was taken over by Haider Ali and his son Tipu Sultan after their coup over Mysore kingdom. After 20 years under Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, the British captured it.
The fort consists of seven layers of fortifications, with many strategically designed gates. Inside the fort are living quarters, granaries, water reservoirs and 18 significant Hindu temples built between 11th and 17th centuries CE.
