Soms, however, have 2egarded it as the same with Musck; and we cannot but think that al-Birdn, in identifying, as he does, IBharani wikh al-Button, meant to indicate by the latter name the group of which the Hindu asterism is actually composed. The last Chinese Rise, Dei , is the star B5 Arietis, or a Muscat. 3. K¢t thor, as plural, httik(8 ; the arpellative meaning of the word is doubtful. The regent of the asterisrm is Agn the god of fire. The groupcomposed of six sta45, is thst known to us as the Plciades. It is figured by some as a fame, doubtles£ in sillusion to its presiding divinitby : the more usual representetion of it is a razor, भnd in the choice of this symbol is to be recognized the influence of the etymology of the name. which may be derived from the root kart, cut in the configurption of bhe group, too, may be seen, by a sufficiently pro&uic eye, a broad-bladed knife, with a short handld. If the designation given below {v. 18) of ¥be southern member of the group as its junction-star, be strictly true, this is not Alcyone, or Tauri (magn. B), the brightest of the six, but oither Ablis (27 Mauri : magn. 4) or Merope (2B 'Lauri : magn. 5): the two latter were very bety equally distant from the equator of A.D. 500, but Atlas is a litle nearer to the ecliptic. The defined position agrees bsst with Aloyome, nor on we hesitate to regard this as actually the junction-star of the asterism. The Pleiades constitute the third argil of he Arabs, which is denominated ath-'huriyd, ‘ the little bhick-ket group, or en-Najrn, Bhe natelLation .
