where the Bhasya itself expressly states where a sūtra
ends (e.g. 1. 2. 1, 2. 4. 13). In a very few cases the
Bhasya mentions (e.g. on pp. 11, 38, 49, 94, 101, 164,
168, 169, 201, 226, 227) the division of the sūtra
differently from what it explains. It will be observed
that the division of the sutra-s chosen by Devasvāmin
is considerably different from what is available in the
edition of Stenzler¹ or in the editions often printed in
India mostly with the Vitti of Nārāyaṇa.2 Stenzler
stated that his numbering of the sutra-s was based on
Nārāyaṇa's Vṛtti and was in some cases due to the ex-
pedience of meaning. In the present edition the divi-
sion of the sutra-s is shown as found in the manuscripts
and as commented on in the Bhāṣya. In one case even
two kandika-s (3. 8-9) of the earlier editions have been
made into one. But no attempt has been made to
tamper with the manuscript tradition (see note on pp.
211, 222) though this difference would create difficulty
in citing the sutra text.
