61 road with him. Once upon a time Gautame went abroad for the performance of essential duties early in the morning. Indra caught the time by forelock and disguising himself went to her. Ahalyk was astonished that her husband should be back so soon. Indra dispelled her doubt by the answer 'I am Gautama, havo come here soon being unable to overcome the sentiment of love, and polluted her. The sage himself came back, discovered the mischief and cursed both the miscreants. The absurdity of the wyth is remuved by the perusal of the S'atapatha Brâlimaņa. इन्द्रागछति गौरावस्कन्दिन्नहल्यायै जारेति. शत. कां. ३ अ०३. एष एवेन्द्रो य एप सपति &c. अहल्या (that absorbs the dey) अहीयतेऽस्यां-night. गौतम---Moon. 57_Sup. P. 127. L. 8-9 (Verse 31). Indra! go on thundering, send down rain and launch thunderbold in hundreds--(but remember) females, hastening to meet their lovers can never be stopped. Hoy measure. (Also in 26 and 27.) This verse is cited in the Subhashitavali but with some discrepeney. There it is rather a combination of this and the sixteenth.-- गर्न वा वर्ष वा मेघ मुश्च वाशनितोमरान गणयन्ति न शीतोष्णं वलभाभिमुखा नराः।' P. 293. S'krngadharpadahali alters apai: into af:. The verse occurs in the Subhashitaratna.bhandagara also. दीपकालङ्कारः, कारकस्य बहीषु क्रियासु सकृदृत्तिस्यात् तथा प काव्यप्रकाशकृत् X. 71. 'सकृदृप्तिस्तु धर्मस्य प्रकृताप्रकृतात्म- नाम् । सैव क्रियासु बङ्गीषु कारकस्येति दीपकम् ॥ P. 127. L. 10-11 (Verse 32). If the cloud thunders---even be it so-men are naturally rude. But gentle lightning, how can you not conceive the morng troubling a feminino heart (lit. do you even not know the aftection of the females)? ref measure. Cf. 'तारापते कुमुदिनीमनुकूलकान्सां 'पादेन पौडयसि कम्पयसि द्विजातीन् । विद्वेषमाचरसि किं च वियोगिलोके भक्तपरस्य भवतः करुणा कुतः स्यात् ॥' Subhashitaratnákara p. 153.
