- snake-bite. The use of encharmed water for curing a snakebite is a well known recipe. But I have found the particular
- mode, here referred to as followed by Dhruvasiddhi, noticed nowhere else. MS. G reads the passage somewhat differently: धुव-
- सिध्धी विण्णेवदि उदकुम्भपिहाणे सप्पमुहिअं कप्पिइदव्वं [कप्पइदव्वं ?]। तं अण्णेसिअदुत्ति:” If our interpretation is correct this reading seems to
- be easier than our own. Prof. Weber, I do not know on what
- authority, considers उदकुम्भ as a proper noun.
- P.68,1.12.-कर्मसिद्धौ. • After the business is done. That is, as soon
- as Gautama is cured of the snake-bite.
- P.69,1.2–पकिदिथ्थो‘ प्रकृतिं प्रतिपन्नः That is, he is made as sound

- P.69,1.4. —एसे अमच्चो &c. A contrivance for the King to bring his
- interview to an end. G very properly inserts ‘ उण' after एसो. –
- अणुग्गहीदुं. Used passively.
- P.69,1.14. –समाप्तकृत्यो गौतमः. Alluding to the liberation of Mâlavikâ
- and her friend by means of the Queen's ring.
- P.70,1.3.—प्रयोगम्. Referring to the contrivance by which the Queen
- was made to give the ring.
- P.70,1.6.-मङ्गलकजजाइं . A mangala kârya is any religious work, the
- performance of which is associated with joy and prosperity;
- e.g., the marriage ceremony, the thread ceremony, &c. All
- precautions are taken that no obstacle of any kind should interrupt the progress of such ceremonies or works. Vidûshaka
- by applying the term to what he has done means, that he has
- fortunately performed his great mission without any let or hindrance. Works that are not mangalakâryâņi, are such as the
- funeral ceremonies.
