in the cool hours of the morning and evening in this country.
C. Vikramorvaśî, Act III, “ भूपैर्जालविनिःसृतैर्वडभयः संदिग्धपारावताः
सौध in this passage is any large house, a palace. In valabhi the
Marâthâ will recognise the origin of his word पडवी.
P. 29, 1, 9.-बिन्दूत्क्षेपान्पिपासुः•desirous of drinking the small drops of
water, thrown out by the wheel. For the भ्रान्तिमद् वारियन्त्रम्
(= भ्राम्यत् or भ्रमणं कुर्वत् वारियन्त्रम् ) here referred to is doubtless
the Persian wheel.
P. 30, 1. 2.होदि &c. It is also possible to render this speech thus:
भवतो विशेषेण पानभोजनं त्वरयतु, •May your Majesty be pleased to
order that the dinner be quickly served’ . This, however, though
favoured by the form तुवरदु would hardly be a suitable request
to the Queen.
P. 31, 1. 1–गहीदख्खणोम्हि ‘I have pledged my word, and will of
course strive to redeem it at all hazards, and will not do any
thing else till I have done so’. ’ The word क्षण originally means
’a moment” hence ’leisure,’ ‘ vacation,’ in which last sense our
own Marâthî word सण, a festival, is derived from it. The phrase
गहोदख्खणोम्हि has its origin in the following formula addressed
to a Brahman, who, having been invited to a śrâddah, has come
and is seated ceremoniously near the dish in which he is to dine
at the end of the rite . The formula is:-
गृहीत्वामुकसंज्ञस्यामुकगोत्रस्य चामुके ।
श्राद्धे तु वैश्वदेवार्थं करणीयः क्षणस्त्वया ।
इत्येवं श्राद्धकृद् ब्रूयात्तं प्राप्नोतु भवानिति ।
स वदेत्प्राप्तवानोति इतरस्तं प्रति द्विजः ।
पित्रादेरप्यनेनैव वृणोत विधिना द्विजान् ।
