P. 17, 1. 9.-अइरोवणीदा, but lately made over to the preceptor for instruction? उपनयनम् is lit. 'bringing up to' (the tutor), 'initiation',
the beginning of a course of study-All our MSS. except F,
corroborated as they are by MS. G, assign this speech to the
Queen (देवी ). Attributed to Vidûshaka it must be taken to be
ironical.
P. 17, 1. 1.-अत एव, i.e. ‘ in order the more creditably to show my
skill in teaching.' -On निर्बन्धः, cf. infra, p. 62, 1. 13. Also
Śakuntala, Act III., “ सहि अदो ज्जेव णिब्बन्धो” &c.p. 52, 1. 1्3,

P. 18, 1. 6–प्रभवन्त्योषि, 'even when governing, even when allowed to
domineer over their husbands.' The Parivrâjikâ does not mean
that Dhârinî is not such a प्रभवन्ती, but that she should not abuse
her privilege to such an extent as to be offended without cause.
P. 18, 1.11. क्रियासंक्रान्तिम्, “my ability to pass over to my pupil my
skill in representation:"
P. 18, 1.13.-आसनादुत्तिर्ष्ठतिः Quite characteristic of the irascibility of
the Brahman character.

P. 19, 1. 6–प्पहविस्सं &c. "I shall be still mistress of my attendant."
That is, propose freely anything you like: if it be any way
objectionable, I would still be able to check it, as Mâlavikâ is
my servant.

P. 19, 1. 11–उपदेशन्तरम. MS. G reads उपदेशतारतम्यम्.
