CONTENTS, idSoComp Chapter. f. There are eighteen chapters in the Mahasiddhanta of Aryabhata. In the first chapter which treats of Madhyamadhikara, * representation of numbers by alphabet is first explained, and then the revolutions and other properties of the planets, and the number of solar and other days in a Kalpa, have been shown. In the eleventh Sloka of this chapter on the revolutions of planets, the numbers of revolutions of the Great Bear and Ayanagraha, in a Kalpa, are given to be 1599.998 and 578159 respectively. As stated above, the number of revolutions of the Great Bear in a Kalpa, is 1599998. It will, therefore, pass through 1599998x27 nakshatras in the same period or through one 432Ooooooo бооооооо Ο 1599998 x 27 ”. 1599998 I6OOOOOOO The latter result would be 16OOOOO number of revolutions had increased by two. According to the statement of Varahamihira in Brihatsamhita, that the Great Bear takes one hundred (solar) years in passing through each nakshatara, its number of revolutions in a Kalpa, comes to I6ooooo. According to the author of the Mahasiddhanta, it has been proved to be two less. According to the Brihatsamhita, Yudhishthira reigned 2526 years before the commencement of the Saka. 379 years of the Kalihad passed before the commencement of the Saka. Taking their differince, we find 653, the number of years of the nakshatra in Solar years. or Ioo solar years, if the
