INTRODUCTION ] he was teaching grammar. This evil omen necessitated the suspension of the lessons and Bhar trhari discovered a remedy in the form of this double plan for teaching grammar indirectly through a longer narrative poem on the life of Rama Bhattit's end is mentioned in the Bhojaprabandha in the following citraverse : भट्टिनष्टो भारवीयोऽपि नष्टः भिक्षु नष्टो भीमसेनोऽपि नष्टः । भु बकुण्डोऽहं भुपतिस्त्वं च राजन् भउभापङ्क्तावन्तकः सन्निविष्टः । But it throws no light on the life or date of Bhatti nor does it help in fixing the relative chronological position of the four poets mentioned in the first three lines TI. BHATIKAVYA-A CRITICA, STUDY The Plan of the work The Battikayyya, according to the commentators, has been planned on a double level, narrative (lakesya) and illustrative (laksana). On the narrative planeit deals with the life of Rama in twentytwo cantos. The illustrative plane is concerned with illustrating most of the important stras of Panini. It is divided into four Kandas : (1) Miscellaneous rules (Prakhna-kanda) (cantos 1-4), (2) Leading rules (Adhikara-kanda) (cantos 5-9), (3) Rhetorics (Prasanna-add) (cantos 10-13), and (4) Verbal formations: Tenses and Moods (Tiihanta-kanda) (cantos 14-22) . It is strange that the poet includes rhetorics in grammar. His principal aim was the teaching of grammar ; the Ramacarita serves but as a means to the end. Yet the poet has planned it on the model of an art epic like the Raghuvaika, Naisadha etc Naturally our Bhattikavya study too will have two different aspects, Critical Appreciation' and Grammatical Analysis Bhatti's plan, it seems , was emulated by quite a few grammarian-poets. Bhama or Bhmaka has illustrated the whole of Paninis Astadhyayi in his Ravanarjaniyam, an art epic on the story of Sahasrarjuna He too belonged to ValabhiKasinatha's Yaduvataka-kavya draws its narrative portion from the Bhagavata purana and illustrates Panini, Vararuci and Trivikrama,
